The apartment belongs to a modernist complex of vacation houses, built in the 80’s, at Sounio. It takes up the ground floor of a semi-detached house, with a private garden leading to the beach via a short walking path. This close proximity to the sea, offering peace and quiet while only an hour’s drive from their house in Athens, is what the owners valued the most.
We were firstly asked to redesign the floor plan, to improve the indoor/outdoor connection and secondly to provide more storage space. After tearing down the partition walls and the obsolete fireplace, we designed a new kitchen opposite the living room in the apartment’s south façade. It now opens up to one side of the sheltered veranda where there is ample space to eat al fresco. On the other side of the veranda, in front of the living room, we designed a large, deep sofa, ideal for lounging and napping. We redesigned two bedrooms, a bathroom and even a small utility area with bespoke built-in cabinets.
Addressing safety and maintenance issues, we stripped the apartment, revealing the masonry and load bearing structure in order to insulate and protect them from the weathering effects of the sea. All installations (electricity, water, heating) were dismantled and replaced with new ones complying with contemporary standards. The apartment can be cross ventilated to minimise the need for artificial cooling during the summer period.
