This garçonnière - a bachelor's flat- is located on the third floor of a typical residential building, built back in 1980. Interestingly enough it does not feature a balcony as most flats in Athens usually do. The challenging task we were given was to uplift the apartment, both functionally and aesthetically, on a limited budget.
The tiny apartment was reconstructed and refurnished. All installations -electrical, lighting, water, heating, cooling- were dismantled and upgraded to current safety and environmentally friendly standards. The interior walls were either totally or partially torn down in order to allow natural light and fresh air to flow freely.
We totally redesigned the kitchen and the bathroom providing ample storage space and even a dedicated laundry-utility area. In the main room we designed a spacious wardrobe as well as alcove fitted shelving. We chose moveable pieces of furniture and placed them strategically to double-up their usage. A 1.20m width bed, aligned against a wall, turns into a couch by using some extra cushions. An elegant table is used for dining and studying and an entryway bench serves as extra seating for visitors.
We studied the lighting needs and made sure we provided multiple lighting sources, with adjustable hue and brightness, to create a variety of moods. Since the apartment was renovated to be rented on a long-term basis, we used a neutral colour palette to act as a background to the colours preferred by the tenants.
